The final phase of the project was completed in late October/ early November, a group of twelve Irish volunteers travelled to the orphanage on October 26th for a week to finish the building work. We were also joined in New York by three American volunteers from Block Island who wanted to experience volunteer life in Haiti with us for the week and as always we had our usual crew of local Haitian workers employed to help complete the project. July Trip 2013

Our second trip this year to Haiti took place in June/July; we travelled out to Ill a Vache to work on the Physiotherapy room which was started last February.  As usual our team consisted of Irish and Haitian workers and continued great friendships that have developed along with the help of Chavane a local teacher and translator.  At times no translation was needed and the Creole/English language barrier was overcome by sign language, song and sport! We started with the block ...

The school itself sits above ground level, with a ramp that many an experienced mountaineer would have trouble climbing.   When we saw the slope that staff were trying to negotiate we decided this had to be our next ...

July 2011 – Making a difference

One of the great tragedies of recent times is the demand for orphanages across the island of Haiti. It is this that has led to the forming of a small Irish NGO, Haiti Orphanage Project Espwa. Our third trip as a group takes us back to Ille A Vache, an island that lies off the south cost of Haiti. Arriving on site we meet our local Haitian team and our Soul of Haiti partner.  As we discuss the project tasks the ...

Ille a Vache – April 2011

In April 2011 Haiti Oprhanage Project Espwa carried out needs assessments of projects in Haiti with a view to future partnerships.  The second of these trips was in the south of the country, on an island off the port of Les Cayes.   Travelling from Port au Prince, Trish and I left the city behind for a few days and head south by plane to the city of Les Cayes.  Over coastline and mountain Haiti is a beautiful country.  There are ...
