    The time spent working in an orphanage is very often the easy part of organising a humanitarian trip to Haiti. Planning a trip includes the identification of an orphanage to work in, assessment of the work that needs doing, raising of the funds needed to carry out the work, liaising with the local contacts to compile a materials list for works to be completed and deciding on the number of locals required to complete that work.     Having travelled with our fellow Volunteers from Dublin via New York we parted company outside the airport at Port au Prince where our ‘Big Boss’ for the next week in the form of the one and only Gena Heraty from Westport welcomed us and brought us to her Orphanage in Kenscoff. Read more....

    On Friday 27th April we set out from Dublin and after spending overnight in New York we landed in Port au Prince, Haiti on Saturday 28th April 2015. It was at the airport that the group of 11 split into two teams. Three members of the group met with Mayo native Gena Heraty and travelled to her orphanage north of Port au Prince in Kenscoff.     The final phase of the project was completed in late October/ early November, a group of twelve Irish volunteers travelled to the orphanage on October 26th for a week to finish the building work.

    Our second trip this year to Haiti took place in June/July; we travelled out to Ill a Vache to work on the Physiotherapy room which was started last February.

    I'm Nuala Falvey and I travelled solo to Haiti on March 23rd. After a stopover in New York, and after the usual jeep journey to Le Caye, I arrived on Il a Vache on Sunday evening 24th March. This was my fourth trip to Haiti and my first trip travelling alone.

    The first project trip for 2013 rolled around really quickly. The project plan was to build the foundation and pour the concrete floor for the new physiotherapy unit. We also had two very exciting initiatives planned which we were really looking forward to.
